Bullying Prevention – Bully B.E.A.N.S.

This past couple of weeks I was excited to have my first guidance lesson with all the third grade classes! At the beginning of each year in all grade levels, our lesson focus is always bullying. I began by having students listen to a short story and see if they could discover our lesson topic. It was a great springboard to review what we have already learned about bullying. Next we read a book called, Bully B.E.A.N.S. by Julia Cook.  In the book, there is a bully named “Bobette” who repeatedly harasses and threatens the other kids. The kids soon realize that they have the courage to stand up to a bully after eating special "Bully B.E.A.N.S.," which represent courage or confidence. After reading the book, we did a little demonstration of how bullies take away other people's power. When a target is all alone, they can sometimes feel powerless to handle a bullying situation on their own. However, when upstanders (we use this term now instead of “bystander” to describe those who stand up for the victims) surround and support the target, the bully cannot take away their power. We talked about common problems that are reported at school and the things we have learned to best handle a variety of situations. A handout titled, “Is it Bullying?” will be coming home so that you can see what your child has learned related to this topic and have discussions about how to handle kids who say or do mean or inappropriate things at times.

Welcome to Third Grade!

The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as that every child should be given the wish to learn.
